The fastest growing segment of the population? Adults 80 and better.
This 96 year-old mother is hugging her 78 year-old son! The aging revolution impacts every aspect of life: healthcare, housing, employment, commerce, family life. With more than 10,000 Americans turning 75 every day, practical, science-based knowledge and listening to users is the key to successful innovation.
Look no further than your hands to see the second revolution.
Globally, there are 4.7 billion users on the internet. The digitization of everything is transforming our world through profound changes in service delivery, access, information, artificial intelligence, and security. If they learn to listen to their users, innovators worldwide are poised to reinvent later life.
We'll never go back to normal,
but we can go forward to better.
We collectively mourn the 2.6 million fellow humans and reimagine a better world, a better old age. There has never been a greater need for innovation aimed at later life: work, healthcare, transportation, meaning, caregiving, entertainment, volunteering, social connection, exercise, housing, shopping, end-of-life.
Innovations and digital tools have the potential to enable care anywhere, support aging in place, manage chronic diseases, prevent falls, reduce social isolation, provide access to meals, improve physical and mental health.
Digital innovation will only make a difference in the new longevity if they are accepted, adopted, and embraced by their intended users.... older adults.
The Gerontologist is an advisory firm helping people succeed in the human side of innovation in longevity.
Listening to current and future users is the key to your success in the new longevity. Skillful listening leads to an accurate understanding of what older users want & why. Only with a deep and accurate understanding can you design solutions that older people want to use.
Listening is not something you only do at the beginning. Successful implementation of innovation in the longevity economy requires the guidance of older adults in each stage of implementation: building, testing, learning, repeat.
Our aim is to enable your company to meet the needs of older people with dignity and love. I'm honored to share 25 years of gerontological experience to enable you to hear what your users will teach you about what they want, need, and value in the new longevity.

I'm Kerry Burnight, PhD, founder of the advisory firm, The Gerontologist, Inc. I am on a life-long mission to improve the second half of life.
As professor of Geriatric Medicine for nearly two decades, I saw first hand the tragedies and triumphs of growing old. I co-founded and directed the nation's first Elder Abuse Forensic Center and the national non-profit, Ageless Alliance: United Against Elder Abuse.
For 5 years, I served on the executive leadership team of GrandPad, a technology firm that has connected over 100,000 adults using custom-engineered tablets.
Now my focus is on transcendent design. That is, solutions to every day challenges that serve older people so well that all people ASPIRE to use them.
Making older lives better requires:
